[Aromatherapy, Essential Oils, Extracts online] Unilever Moves Ahead with Concern Kalina Acquisition

Unilever announced that, in regard to its October announcement about its 82% acquisition of Russian beauty company Concern Kalina, Unilever has obtained the necessary regulatory clearances in Russia and Ukraine and hascompleted the acquisition of 82% of the outstanding shares of Concern Kalina. The transaction will transform Unilever’s beauty business in Russia, giving it leading positions in skin care and hair care, as well as establishing a presence in oral care. It will also strengthen and rebalance Unilever’s portfolio and competitiveness in Russia, an emerging market with considerable potential and one of Unilever’s priority countries.

The amount paid to acquire the 82% stake is approximately RUB17.4 billion, approximately RUB0.7 billion higher than the amount previously announced, reflecting a number of adjustments in respect of cash equivalent items. The enterprise value for 100% of Concern Kalina is unaffected and remains approximately RUB25.9 billion. Also, Unilever plans to cause Concern Kalina to delist the shares from the Russian Trading System (RTS) and MICEX stock exchanges in December 2011.

On or about January 10th, 2012 Unilever will offer to acquire all of the remaining Concern Kalina shares in Russia. The price per share is expected to be RUB 4,267.92, as the highest price Unilever paid to the selling shareholders, but the final amount will be determined by Russian law. Concurrently, Unilever will offer to all holders of Concern Kalina’s American Depositary Shares (ADSs) and Global Depositary Shares (GDSs) a price per ADS/GDS equal to RUB 4,267.92, without interest and less any fees, currency conversion expenses, applicable taxes and government charges. This amount will be converted to U.S. dollars on or about the date that Unilever pays for the Concern Kalina shares tendered in the Russian offer and move the total sale forward.

In addition, if after consummation of the offer, Unilever and its affiliates own shares representing more than 95% of the outstanding shares of Concern Kalina, Unilever intends to purchase any Concern Kalina shares (including those represented by ADSs/GDSs) not owned by Unilever and its affiliates at a price determined by Russian law.

[Aromatherapy, Essential Oils, Extracts online] Avon to Split CEO, Chairman Roles

Avon Products, Inc. announced that in 2012 the company will separate the roles of chairman and CEO. The company said Andrea Jung, Avon's chairman and CEO, will be named executive chairman, and that a committee of the board of directors will work with Jung to undertake an external search for a CEO. Jung will continue to serve in her dual roles throughout the recruitment process and will work closely with the new CEO to assure a successful transition.

"I believe the time is right to separate the chairman and CEO roles, and I look forward to continuing to serve Avon as chairman as we address the company's growing scale and opportunities," said Jung, who has been Avon's CEO since 1999. "Over the past 12 years we have transformed the business from a decentralized group of local operating entities to a globally managed business in more than 100 countries with global brands and a global operating model. In the process, revenues have more than doubled, and the number of representatives has doubled as well. As we look to the future, Avon's business model remains advantaged, with both the beauty and direct selling industries growing around the world, and with our broad, geographic footprint. A new CEO will provide a fresh lens and additional operational and executive leadership."

Fred Hassan, managing director and partner, Warburg Pincus LLC, and Avon's lead independent director added, "Avon's board of directors fully supports Andrea and appreciates her commitment to continue to serve the company as executive chairman and assure a smooth and successful management transition. Separating the chairman and CEO roles as well as strengthening overall management capabilities are important steps to help the company capture its future opportunities. The board looks forward to continuing to work closely with Andrea and the new CEO to put the company back on a growth track."

Jung said that in her role as executive chairman she will work closely with the new CEO in support of the company's overall strategic direction and brand positioning. She will continue to be involved in maintaining strong relationships with Avon's key constituencies, including her role in motivating the company's millions of representatives, and her advocacy on behalf of the Avon Foundation for Women.

Essential Oils- Nutmeg

Nutmeg Oil aroma is reminiscent of Christmas, so they say. Rightly so, because a lot of Christmas goodies are flavoured with Nutmeg Oil.

Nutmeg is one of the world's most favourite spices. Botanically, it is called Myristica Fragrans, an equatorial tree, growing to about 70 feet, found in Grenada, Indonesia and the West Indies. The seeds are used to extract the essential oil. Manufacturers of nutmeg essential oil import the seeds from these countries.

Nutmeg is called the queen of spices, and no modern kitchen is without a nutmeg as one of its prized spices.

Aroma-therapeutic it is said to be a brain tonic, a nerve stimulant and relaxant. Nutmeg Oil is said to improve the sub-conscious health. Students and professionals alike, can benefit greatly from this oil.

The Chinese use Nutmeg oil to treat body pains, as an analgesic for the aching muscles and joints. Thus ailments like lumbago, rheumatism and arthritis benefit from Nutmeg oil use.

Due to its sedative and “warming” properties, Nutmeg oil is also called the "winter oil".

Its uses both in the culinary and aromatherapy are without a doubt legendary.

Magnesium Oil

Magnesium oil is now widely recognized all around the world because of its natural health benefits. It is considered as a wonder drug or a perfect remedy for almost every kind of pain, discomfort, and illness that we are experiencing. It is for the said reasons that magnesium oil is now in demand these days. More and more people are including magnesium in their every day regimen.

If you are looking for the purest oil, then you have to go all the way to Europe. A sea of magnesium oil chloride is found in a deep underground in Europe. It is said to be 250 million years old and it has never been touched by modern day pollution. Experts also believe that the amount of pure magnesium oil found is enough to supply man's need for magnesium for more than a hundred of years. It can function perfectly as a mouthwash and for strengthening our muscles. Magnesium oil has more uses than we can ever imagine. Let me enumerate some of them.

Magnesium oil is effective in pain management. Most doctors who are into treating chronic pain advice their patients to apply oil for pain relief and relaxation of muscles. It is best for people complaining of arthritis and muscle cramps. Magnesium oil is directly applied to the affected part and it can automatically alleviate the chronic pain and muscle cramps. It also facilitates the opening up and softening of muscles and connective tissues. Magnesium is already tried and tested as an efficient vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant.

Magnesium oil is also widely used in therapeutic massages. More and more people are requesting for oil during their massage therapy. It is found that an ounce of magnesium that is rubbed all over our body could help ease the pain that we are experiencing plus it can also soothe our nerves and calm our senses. It is also effective to reduce stress, sensory overload, slow the heart, and provide the person with a holistic healing experience.

As we all know, the application of magnesium transdermally is the most ideal magnesium delivery system in our body. It is even found to have a similar effect with intravenous treatments conducted during emergency situations. So, if we want to make sure that our body would have regular magnesium intake, we should see to it that we use magnesium during our regular massage session. An ounce or more of magnesium per day for six months can do wonders. It can provide numerous health benefits to our body like penetrating our cells to improve cellular function.

Massage Therapy

Whether to relieve the stress of the work day, to unbind tired and sore muscles, or just to treat oneself to a relaxing afternoon, more and more people are looking towards massage therapy. Once considered a luxury, the health benefits of massage are becoming well known and the expanding field has reduced costs so that virtually anyone can afford it. Businessmen, at-home mothers, athletes, people who do heavy physical labor or have emotionally stressful jobs, and people with recurring problems all look to massage therapy for relief.

The benefits of massage therapy are many and varied. Pain relief is one of the most common reasons people get massage, particularly for back and neck pain. Athletes can use massage to promote quicker muscle growth or to repair damage from over-strenuous workouts. Expecting mothers can use massage to help with the discomforts of pregnancy as well as to strengthen and relax muscles for the birth process. Regular treatments can help with stress relief and promote better sleep, improved concentration, reduce fatigue and increase energy levels. Increased flexibility, a stronger immune system, improved circulation, and lower blood pressure are some more benefits.

At-home massage is popular these days, especially for people who enjoy the comfort of their own home as opposed to visiting a spa. It is convenient, as the therapist comes to the client and if after a massage the customer feels like taking a shower or a nap, they are free to do so without enduring the drive home. This can be a better option for those who are unable to get to a spa due to illness or transportation problems. Making an appointment for home is usually easier to fit into a schedule as well. You can find massage therapists via the internet. However, sometimes people do not feel comfortable with having someone in their home that they barely know and may opt for a spa over home therapy. A massage at home may be more expensive, but you're paying for the quality of the professional and the extra load of them carrying their table over a hit or miss therapist at a spa.

Spa massages, while requiring travel to and from the location of the therapy, provide more options to a client. Frequently there are other massage-enhancing treatments such as body wraps, waxing, or pedicures that can be added to turn the massage into an all-day, relaxing mini-vacation. Spas have the benefit of usually having a sauna, hot tub, or even a pool on site as well, all good ways to continue relaxing. Spas are also free of distractions such as phones, neighbors, pets, and other interruptions which might spoil the moment. You can easily find a spa near your home. The main disadvantage to using a spa is the traveling and, depending on the class of the spa, the cleanliness of the sheets, sauna, hot tubs, and showers. After a good massage the customer might not feel up to driving all the way home and leave their relaxed state, especially if they leave to traffic.

With research finding more benefits to regular massage every year, it is a healthy choice for those seeking to heal their body or their mind. Even an infrequent massage can work wonders towards one's health and disposition. Everyone should try massage at least once; though once they do it is unlikely they will be able to resist a second or third treatment, nor should they.

Health Benefits of Using Organic Bath and Body Products For Your Baby

Pink or blue is what most people think of when they think of sweet, chubby babies. But you are thinking green. As your new baby enters the world, she is fresh, pure and untainted. You only want the best to surround her and the peace of mind that she is protected from harsh and unnecessary chemicals.

In years past, you would have had to make your own organic products for your baby. But following the popularity of organic food, organic baby products have found vast acceptance among attentive and purposeful parents. An array of Eco-friendly, organic skin care products including lotion, shampoo, soap and gifts, are now available for the conscientious parent.

Chemical Overload

Babies are exceptionally sensitive to the health risks inherent in pesticides and other chemicals. They eat and drink more than adults in relation to their size so their food must be chemical free. Even organic clothing is wise because of the high chemical content in cotton and synthetic fabrics. But skin care is of the utmost importance.

Since their skin is so new and soft, it absorbs chemicals, preservatives and harsh detergents easier and more quickly than an adult's skin would. Even nationally branded products that are made for babies include large amounts of fragrances, detergents and preservatives, all which can irritate the skin and lungs, can cause skin reactions and are unnecessarily strong for children. And considering how often the baby puts her fingers in her mouth and you can also begin to see the danger of digestion.

Choosing Organic

With organic bath and body products specifically made for babies, you can feel confident that you are keeping your baby clean and healthy without subjecting her to harsh chemicals. All-natural baby skin care products use botanicals to accomplish the same purpose as chemicals, without the disturbing side effects.

Her hair will be just as clean when you use organic shampoo. He eyes and skin will be less irritated when you rinse away the shampoo. She will smell just as sweet when you use natural handmade soap, baby bath with natural ingredients and certified organic body care products. And her skin will be just as smooth when you utilize Shea butter and organic body lotion. You can rest easy that her skin will not have a reaction and she will not be in any danger of ingesting residual chemicals as she sucks her fingers and toes.

Natural skin care products also addresses sensitive skin issues. The longer she avoids products that trigger sensitive skin irritations, she stronger and more resilient her skin will be. There is no need to try endless products, trying to determine the trigger for her sensitive issue. Instead choose purely organic and avoid sensitivity issues entirely.

Conclusion

Organic skin care products do more than provide peace of mind. You have given her a healthy start during her formative years. As your toddler grows, you can forgo worrying if she accidentally guzzles the bottle of shampoo or chews on the bar of soap. You have set the stage for a life-long use of natural, safe and chemical free pro.

It seems that despite of how couples put their best intention into their wedding favors, the mementos are often thrown away right after the wedding. Whether you will accept that fact or not, but it happens. As an upcoming bride, you might now be asking yourself how to combat such common problem on the wedding favors. Besides, what is more essential to live a life everyday than doing regular bathroom routines? Therefore, bath and soap wedding favors are simply the perfect idea to thank your guests.

You might want to consider shaped soaps as souvenirs that your guests can take home. These are not only practical to use, but also practical to a tight budget. Soaps are among the cheapest options when it comes to wedding favors. The interesting part when shopping for them is that they are available in a wide variety of clever shapes and various colors. The idea of presenting soaps is pretty much similar to what you will get when you are in a hotel, where there are courtesy soap and shampoo given to you. There are many creative ways you may consider like you can have them packaged in nice colored organza bags that match with the color scheme of your wedding. Or, you can have them wrapped using a custom wrapper with a few clever touches. There is an unlimited option to make soap favors unique. Just explore your creativity and imagination, and you will never fail.

Another option would be bubble or bath oil wedding favors. If you opt for more deluxe idea, consider bubble bath or bath salts or oil as mementos of your wedding. Combined with warm water in a tub, your guests will surely enjoy their bath routine everyday with the help of your amazing wedding favor. These are perfect for guests who are usually busy at work or even for college bridesmaids, as these bath products can help soothe away their body pain and can provide them with a prime relaxation.

Other deluxe options include scented shampoos and body wash. These can be packaged in a custom bottle with a personalized label or tag. How to Bathe Your Dogs

With regards to bathing your dog, you can't just do what you think is right. You have to be sure that what you're doing is good for your pet, or else your dog's health might not benefit from it. To make sure that you're bathing your dog properly, here are some of the basics that you need to know.

Bathe your dog only when needed, but a regular schedule can be good as well. It's easier to keep a schedule so you won't miss bathing your dog. At least once a month will be good for your dog. You have to keep in mind that bathing your dog too often can be bad for its skin because the water and soap eliminates the natural oils that keep your dog's skin moisturized and healthy.

Use warm water for bathing your pet. This not only makes bathing comfortable for your dog, it also eliminates ticks and fleas. Warm water is also better for cleaning your dog's skin and hair.

Be careful in washing your dog. You shouldn't pour water directly over its head as it can enter his ears and irritate him. If you have a handheld shower, you can use it to wash your dog much easier.

Use a good shampoo for your dog. The best shampoo that you can use is a natural dog shampoo or a baby shampoo. These are mild enough not to cause irritation to the skin and prevent the hair of your dog from falling out. If your dog has fleas, you should use a shampoo that's formulated for that purpose or one that's prescribed by your vet.

Shampoo and rinse your dog thoroughly. Make sure that you shampoo every area of your pet's body. After working up a good lather on your pet, rinse it very thoroughly with warm water. Don't miss any shampooed area, as this can cause the hair of your dog to fall out and its skin to itch.

After bathing, make sure that you have all the necessary tools to groom your pet. Have a big towel and other small towel nearby, together with a comb, and even dog powder to keep it protected from fleas and ticks. After rinsing your dog, wrap it in a big towel and pat dry the other body parts especially the face, ears, and tail. Let your dog wriggle itself dry but keep it in the bathroom or in the closed area where you bathed it. Brush your dog's hair after drying so it will not tangle and become disorderly.

When your dog has finished bathing, it will definitely have a nice, newly-bathed smell. But this won't last for long because of the dog's very active lifestyle. Make sure you groom it daily even if you don't bathe your dog so that it is kept clean and tidy at all times. Brushing your dog's hair everyday is one of the best ways to do this.

If you really love your dog, you will have to commit yourself to these activities. Grooming your dog is very important, so be sure to follow these steps to keep your dog clean, tidy, healthy, and happy.

Skin Care Products - Ingredients To Avoid

Great Article

If you have acne-prone skin, or your skin is often itchy and red, avoiding common ingredients in many skincare products and makeup may be the easiest way to calm irritated and blemished skin.

The first thing to remember about skincare products is that you get what you pay for. Cheap ingredients, while more easily obtained, are often harsh and pore-clogging. Secondly, ingredients are listed on product labels in order of quantity, so if you cannot avoid products containing bad ingredients, try to find products that list such ingredients near the end. Third, if you are purchasing products from behind a counter at the mall or from an online store, ask to see the ingredients - you may be surprised at what you find.

Although there are many ingredients you should avoid in skincare products and makeup, here are some of the worst offenders:

Octyl Stearate

This chemical is used in moisturizers, sunscreens, tanning oils, and eye creams, among others. It is both an irritant and comedogenic, meaning it clogs pores. Although proper moisturization is a must for healthy skin, avoid products containing octyl stearate. If you have ever noticed pimples in the delicate skin around your eye, consider switching your eye cream. Finally, while the dangers of tanning have been stressed due to the potential for skin cancer, harsh ingredients in tanning products is another reason to learn to love your pale skin. Products containing octyle stearate include Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Foundation, Almay Kinetin Eye Treatment, and Cellex-C Sun Care.

Algae Extract

While this ingredient sounds "natural," that doesn't mean your skin will be receptive to its irritatant and comedogenic properties. Algae Extract, also listed as seaweed extract or gelidiela acerosa extract, can be found in many products such as Clairol Hydrience Haircolor, Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Eye Cream, Origins A Perfect World Eye Cream, and Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion, among many others. Two other algae-derived products, algin (or sodium alginate) and carrageenan, are also used to stabilize or emulsify skin and hair products such as facial cleansers, moisturizers, and exfoliants, shampoos and conditioners, and shaving cream. Fortunately, algin is easy to avoid; carrageenan is more prevalent.

Laureth-4

This coconut-derived surfactant, dispersant, and emulsifier (meaning it evenly suspends one liquid throughout another, rather than allowing it to settle) is an extremely common ingredient in all kinds of skincare products that can be difficult to avoid. Some Aveeno bath products and body scrubs contain Laureth-4, and it can also be found in Gillette shaving gels and even some acne treatments. It is worth your while to search out products free of this comedogenic and irritating alcohol.

Sodium Chloride

Otherwise known as salt - yes, the kind used to flavor food - sodium chloride is a pore-clogging chemical found in products too numerous to mention. Just because you can safely eat it doesn't mean you should put it on your skin! Aveeno- Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser is a good bet if you want to avoid sodium chloride and most other harsh ingredients, such as those listed in this article.

Isopropyl Myristate

Primarily comedogenic, isopropyl myrstate may also be somewhat irritating to sensitive skin. It is derived from both plant and animal fatty acids and helps the skin absorb the skincare product. Isopropyl myristate is a common ingredient found in body lotions, like Neutrogena Light Sesame Formula, tanning lotions by Banana Boat, and foundations by Estee Lauder and Cover Girl.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

This chemical is a detergent used in many hair and skin products. It helps the product to lather. Until recently, sodium lauryl sulfate was nearly impossible to avoid, but because of industry safety concerns and a little bad press, it is much less difficult to find alternative products. If you must use a product with sodium lauryl sulfate, make sure you rinse your skin and hair thoroughly. Never leave a product with this ingredient on your skin. Also avoid sodium laureth sulfate.

There are numerous other ingredients to avoid, if possible. Acne-causing ingredients include: hexadecyl alcohol, oleth-3, and wheat germ oil. Irritants include: acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and colloidal sulfur. Mineral oil (petrolatum) may dry out skin in the long run, as will propylene glycol.

Even if a chemical has been approved as "safe" for skincare, it is important to remember that it may not be ideal for individuals with sensitive and/or acne-prone skin. Although "natural" ingredients (like the algae ingredients listed above) are touted as better for your skin, you should still be discerning about which products you use. With care - and, perhaps, the sacrifice of a few more dollars - you can prevent many of the problems these products are intended to solve.

"Recent studies show, that" many products, which long as safe by the FDA, and so the American public in fact have a negative impact on our health, including many of petroleum derivatives, which are widely used in cosmetics and bath and body care products. Here are some affordable, effective alternatives to the chemical and petroleum-based bath and body products.

Course begins gorgeous of course clean. For cleaning chemical-free, try a plant-based Castile SOAP with olive or other vegetable oils. You can even a number of chemical cleaners in your home as replace shampoo and laundry services and are less dry than traditional SOAP! Dr. Bronner's classic liquid soap (available, that online and in natural foods stores) with organic products, free trade and comes in a number of formulations, including one with antibacterial tea tree oil, which is great for acne prone skin and a Unfragranced, irritant-free version for children and those with very sensitive skin.

Epsom salts relax and detoxify, and you can find this reasonable prices at most drugstores and pharmacies. Add some on a hot bath or foot bath, or mix with a bio oil such as olive, coconut, and jojoba for a scrub peeling, the strengths and is soft. If you want to add a few drops of essential oil for perfume. (Note that some essential oils, such as citrus fruits are toxic oils, although they are naturally derived.) Create A Home Spa

Here are 10 personal little home spa tips that will make you look and feel like a million bucks!

Squeeze in a few extra minutes to your every day self care time and you’ll see how easily these step by step pampering recommendations will turn even the toughest days around. Or if you can negotiate a few minutes here and there from your day to get even more time…by all means… do it! Your family, friends and co-workers will meet a much happier, more chipper, fantastically refreshed you!

In Preparation:

First things, first. No shopping, buying or leaving the house. Scour the house for a few fun spa essentials and make a decadent ‘Home Spa Day’ just with what you have tucked away!

Why put off what you could be doing right now?! I suppose if you are out and about and feel so inclined to pick up special bath salts, moisturizers or essential oils… so be it. I admire your level of commitment!

- Grab your robe and slippers

- Find a soothing CD that you absolutely love

- Scented candle

- A washcloth, loofah, bath brush or a new scrubbie back there in the drawers you forgot about

- Fluffy cotton towel

- Bath salts or essential aromatic oils (if you have them)

- Your cleansers, toners and moisturizers

- Coarse sea salt

- Plenty of chilled spring water (with a splash of lime or lemon) in the fanciest glass you can find

- Steep a cup of green tea

Let go of your day… your obligations… responsibilities… stress… and strain. Toss out the barrage of thoughts streaming through your mind (even if it’s just for a moment). Trust me... they’ll still be around later for you to poke at, ponder or peruse.

Try to relax. Take yourself on a far away vacation in your head, tell yourself a “Once Upon A Time” story, remind yourself what a princess you are and remember how essential these precious moments are to your happiness and sanity!

Welcome To Your At Home Spa Vacation!

1. Take it easy and slow down your breath, your thoughts and your movements. Put on your favorite CD and start prepping a very simple shower or bath in a wonderfully slow, deliberate and unhurried way. Take time to watch the candle burn, smell the fragrance, feel the soft robe or towels, look at the sparkling drops of water and run your hands through it… take in the joyful process of an every day activity that we just fly through without a second thought!

2. Use essential oils. Not only do they smell great, but they are extremely good for your skin. The rule to applying essential oils is to never apply them directly on your face or skin. Just add about five drops to a bowl of warm water. Soak a washcloth in the water and then apply to your face and neck as a compress for five minutes. Repeat three times. Gently towel dry and finish yourself off with an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory facial splash.

If you have a choice of essential oils to choose from, select one that suits your mood and purpose. If you are desparking the stress level this holiday, choose soothing oils (like lavender, chamomile, jasmine, sandalwood and ylang-ylang). Good revitalizing and energizing oils when you need them are peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, basil and juniper. The aroma can also provide psychological and physical benefits too!

Essential oils can help with physical conditions, rejuvenate the skin, eliminate waste, alleviate stress, enhance your mood, restore vitality and facilitate the regeneration of new, healthy cells.

3. Basic Body Scrub and Cleansing If you decided you only have time for an indulgent, relaxing shower… start with a basic body scrub and cleansing. I found this fabulous new product called Spongeables (www.spongeables.com). It’s a soap and a sponge all in one. It lasts for a full month of frothy fragrant showering. My favorite fragrance is fresh lavender… and they have them fragrance free too if that’s more your style.

Whatever sponge, cloth or brush you decide on… scrub mindfully and only gently brush your skin. Gentle circular motions will increase your circulation and eliminate toxins and excess water.

Another in home spa trick is to mix an ounce of ground sea salt with 10 or so drops of your favorite essential oil. Add water and make a paste so it spreads easily. Apply it to your entire body and slough off the dead skin with big circular strokes. This salt scrub will exfoliate dead skin cells, cleanse the pores and help your body get rid of any toxins.

4. Draw a bath. Add 5 to 10 drops of an essential oil to bath salts. Grab an extra pillow, put a kitchen trash bag over it to keep it dry and then put a pillow case over that. You just bought yourself 10 extra comfy minutes in the bath tub. You might as well take a book too! Follow it with a warm shower and a dry yourself off with a fluffy cotton towel. If someone in the house really loves you… get them to toss it in the dryer for 5 minutes and greet you with fluffy warmth. If you have a body toning lotion handy, apply to your body (not your face) for additional firming and toning so you’ll look even better in that little black dress.

5. Be nice to yourself. These are your precious rejuvenating moments. Take your time. Pamper yourself and try not to get caught up in the have-to’s and the should-do’s. Don’t be in a rush. Not only will you lose some of the benefits of this quality time to refresh and relax, you may start sloughing off and using rough, damaging strokes.

6. Hurrying has its risks. Without slow, mindful, attentive movements, you could cause inflammation and jeopardize that fresh, healthy, glowing complexion that will make you a bright shining super star. You can actually accelerate the aging process by being too rough! Now there’s a good enough reason in and of itself to slow down.

7. Care for your hair. It is taking a beating in these winter elements. Add ¼ ounce of lavender to sixteen ounces of shampoo. Or for oily hair, add ¼ ounce of lemongrass or rosemary to 16 ounces of shampoo. Essential oils can make invigorating scalp massages. Rosemary is awesome! If you decide not to use the oils, make sure you at least give yourself a long, sudsy scalp massage. Close your eyes, lay your head back and drift for a moment.

8. Replenish lost moisture to your skin and hair this winter by taking two tablespoons of organic flaxseed oil twice a day. You’ll get rid of the itchies and combat wrinkles and sagging skin.

9. Treat your fabulous face. All the treatments above were just for your bod. Your face is special and delicate. The skin on your face is thinner and more fragile than your body. Treat your face with extreme care and gentleness. Even though it’s cold avoid extremely hot water, harsh soaps or any drying cleansers.

Grab a new wash cloth or small sea sponge, add a few drops of your favorite cleanser (preferably an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory liquid cleanser) and then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Apply face firming treatment then put an ice cube inside of a small plastic bag and gently rub over the face and eye area for several minutes to tone and plump up the skin.

10. Rejuvenate from the inside

Drink 8 to10 glasses of water every day.

Eat lots of whole foods, green vegetables, fresh fruits, grains, nuts and lean protein to reduce inflammation, replenish moisture and bring back a youthful glow.

Take 3 full, deep breaths from your abdomen (keep your shoulders still) to complete your simple happy essential home spa experience.

The benefits and joy you experience during your at home spa day

will be more colored by your desire and your intentions than any fancy, expensive products you can buy. Be mindful, set your intentions and gradually transition in to or out of your work day… always cherishing these simple, sacred rejuvenating moments.

Beauty Bargains: Gathered Our Favorite Products That Are $10 or Less

Most of the following products can easily be found at drugstores and mega markets. Prices for each can vary widely depending on sales and specials, so we've rounded each product's price to the nearest 50 cents.

As for the makeup, we stuck to blush, bronzer, mascara and lip gloss. The perfect foundation, concealer and powder depend on skin type and personal preference (that doesn't mean there aren't good ones out there for under $10, however).

Dove bar soap ($2.50, two bars): Generations of women swear by it for perfectly moisturized (but not greasy) skin. Many people with sensitive skin keep going back to plain ol' Dove after finding other products too dry or irritating. Some prefer the liquid body wash version, but we love the classic white beauty bar (it's also way cheaper.)

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($7, 12 ounces): A great fragrance- free body moisturizer that works for all skin types. Now there's even a version with SPF 15 sunscreen built in to protect you from everyday skin damage. We also like Jergens Original Scent ($4.50, 10 ounces) and Natural Glow ($7, 7.5 ounces).

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($8, 8 ounces): The best non-drying face wash for sensitive skin by far, loved by beauty editors and dermatologists for its gentle-yet-e.ective formula. Other good choices include Alpha Hydrox Foaming Face Wash ($7.50, 6 ounces), Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser ($7, 6.7 ounces) and Dove Cool Moisture Cleansing Cloths ($6.50 for 30).

St. Ives Apricot Scrub ($3.50, 7.5 ounces): Exfoliating washes are a hotly debated product (some skin experts say a washcloth used with the right cleanser is good enough), and this apricot scrub can be too harsh for some (there's also a gentle formula version). But it has legions of devoted fans (Allure magazine readers included), and the secret is to not use it every day. And it's so cheap!

Dove Essential Nutrients Day Lotion ($7, 4 ounces): Quality facial moisturizers for less than $10 can be hard to find. Many of the best Aveeno, Olay and Neutrogena products have crept up to the $15 or $20 mark. But here's good ol' Dove with a highly rated daily face moisturizer for $7, complete with SPF 15 sunscreen and antioxidants that are beneficial to skin.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock ($9, 3 ounces): A fantastic sunscreen for face and body that is waterproof and sweat-proof without being greasy. The newest versions with helioplex broad spectrum sunscreen go all the way up to SPF 85. Regular use of a good sunscreen such as this one can spare you a lot of wrinkles and save you money in skin treatments down the road.

Suave Professionals Biobasics Shampoo, ($2, 14.5 ounces): Promises results similar to pricier Biolage shampoo, and fans say it delivers. Hard to argue with the price (it's about $15 to $20 cheaper per bottle than Biolage).

Pantene Pro-V Always Smooth Conditioner ($4, 12.7 ounces): With Oklahoma's summer humidity, we need all the help with frizzy hair we can get. This is a hydrating conditioner that delivers shiny, smooth hair for a bargain price.

Lavender Epsom salts ($3 to $5, sizes vary): No money for the spa? These lavender-scented soothing salts make for a great sore muscle soak ( just don't use if you have shaved within 24 hours - it will sting), they double as a body scrub and they're cheaper than some of the super-posh scrubs and soaks at spas and department stores. (Yeah, Fresh does charge $65 for its Brown Sugar Body Polish. Highway robbery.) Instead, opt for Dr. Teal's, $4.50 atWal- Mart stores, or Walgreen's Apothecary soak for $3.

ALL MADE UP

Maybelline New York Full N' Soft Waterproof Mascara ($6): Maybelline's Great LashMascara may get all the attention and big sales numbers (one is sold every 1.6 seconds), but if you want a truly great mascara that lengthens, separates, lasts and doesn't leave lashes brittle, bypass the pretty pink-and-green packaging and go straight for Full N' Soft instead. Other good bargains include CoverGirl's Professional All-In- One mascara ($5) and for sensitive eyes, Neutrogena'sWeightless VolumeWax-Free mascara ($7).

Physicians Formula Bronzing & Shimmery Face Powder ($10): You could spend $50 for Guerlain's highly touted bronzer, or you save yourself 80 percent and get the same summer glow with this one. It works just as well, and it's fragrance free, oil free and hypoallergenic.

Rimmel London Powder Blush ($3): Devoted fans say it's a great bargain, and we noticed that the pictured shade, Santa Rose, looks an awful lot like Benefit's bestselling "Dallas" blush - which sells for about $20 more.

C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries Mentha Lip Shine ($7.50): For lip gloss junkies, there is no more perfect tube than this Bath & Body Works favorite. Minty, moisturizing and it comes in oodles of flavors and shades. The Ultra Mentha Lip Shine is especially refreshing.

Organic beauty products

Much like organic food, organic beauty products should be made with ingredients that are certified organic, cosmetics and skin care products can be certified through the same processes used for food and the best way to know that you are getting an organic skin care product is to look for the USDA organic seal which means that the product has met the standards of the National Organic Program, the seal can legally be used on products labeled "100% organic" which means what it says or "organic" at least 95% organic products. Products labeled "made with organic ingredients" cannot carry the seal, but they must have at least 70% organic ingredients.

Organic is defined as follows: Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides, fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation so before a product can be labeled 'organic,' a government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. What this means for organic skin products is that the farms that make a product's raw ingredients must use organic farming practices, in addition, the product itself must be produced in a way that keeps the ingredients organic, generally, this means that no chemicals are added during the manufacturing process.

Here are some popular organic beauty products you could lay your hand on:

Jason red elements - Jason products are well known in the organic sector, their new line "Red Elements" is infused with not green, but red tea and both the cleanser and toner have shown promise. Nature's gate organics forget your line wrinkles diffuser - Helps relax facial muscles to decrease the appearance of fine lines.

Zia oat milk detoxifying mask - Best for soothing sensitive or irritated skin, perfect for anyone with problem or sensitive skin and ideal for those with rosacea or eczema as well. Avalons organic renewal and vitality facial cleansing gel - Fine for normal to dry skin, but it also helps soothe sensitive skin too, the mild formula is fine for daily use.

Silky underwear - An innovative product by LUSH made with cocoa butter, jasmine, and cornstarch, it is a perfect body powder for the hot summer months when moisturizer is too much.

Burt's Bees head to toe starter kit - Experience a tidbit of everything Burt's Bees has to offer with this kit full of sampler size products, it works well as a gift or as a travel kit for yourself.

L'Occitane shea butter - This is one of the most famous products by L'Occitane, nonetheless, they offer a wide range of quality products for your skin including a new Grape Body Care line.

Kiss my face moisture shave in lavender and shea butter - Moisturizer for dry skin and great for warding of razor burn or infections from razor cuts.

Kiss my face shampoo - Kiss my face is not only organic, but also affordable, lots of types to choose from, all kinds of conditioners and different hair needs addressed.

Burt's Bees shampoo - Both the shampoo and Burt's Bees conditioners combat different issues from dull hair to color treated hair, they work and smell great and aren't too expensive.

Smooth skin

Smooth skin is achieved when proper care is taken of the skin, for the face, normal skin - A mild facial scrub helps keep skin soft and smooth; try Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub with moisture-rich soy. Acne-prone skin, wash your face with a beta-hydroxy-acid cleanser that penetrates pores, removing dirt and oil like Biore Blemish Fighting Cleanser. Skin with fine lines - Alpha-hydroxy acids digest the cement that keeps dead skin cells attached to one another and makes lines more visible; try Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Face & Body Polish.

Sensitive skin Products containing lactic acid are gentle exfoliators; opt for Chanel Maximum Radiance Delicate Exfoliator. For your body, normal skin - because body skin is thicker than facial skin, rough exfoliant like salt scrubs and crushed natural ingredients like nuts are most effective; try Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa There is the Rub Salt Scrub or Les Elixirs Sweet Orange Exfoliating Cream. Rough skin - Use AHA body products on rough areas like elbows, knees and feet; use Estee Lauder Body Smoother Exfoliating Crème. Sensitive skin - Body exfoliators with jojoba beads are gentle; Murad Exfoliating Body Cleansing Gel also includes chamomile and calendula, both anti-irritants. If you have flesh-colored bumps, up to 40 percent of adults suffer from keratosis pilaris, tiny bumps on the upper outer arms and thighs, the condition is genetically inherited and caused when the skin's top layers don't slough off normally, the hair follicles are elevated above the surrounding skin, resulting in a dead-skin-cell backlog.

Over-the-counter remedy Dermatologist Bruce Katz, M.D., director of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center in New York City, recommends using moisturizers with skin-exfoliating AHAs, try BeneFit Wonderbod, it will help make the surface less rough. For ingrown hairs, that is, people with dark wiry body hair are more prone to these often-painful bumps that frequently appear after waxing or shaving, when growing hair is blocked by dead skin cells or curls at the skin's surface so the tip re-enters the follicle, the follicle and surrounding skin can become infected, causing the bump. Over-the-counter remedy Aida Thibiant, owner of Thibiant Beverly Hills Day Spa in California advises clients to use an exfoliating product and loofah on the area, it takes longer on the arms and butt, she says, but it will make ingrown hairs disappear.

Also apply products with pore-de-clogging salicylic acid to the area daily; try Neutrogena Men Skin Clearing Astringent After Shave. And if you have warts - warts are caused by a viral infection that gives rise to a growth, it is a common problem and they are easy to contract, particularly in places you walk barefoot, like a yoga center or locker room, warts can be contagious both to other people and to you, they can spread to other areas of your body. Over-the-counter remedy "Covering a wart with a bandage stops the possibility of it spreading, Drugstore treatments like DuoFilm are good options for warts on hands and feet, but for more sensitive areas like the face, visit a dermatologist.

Clear skin tips

Maintaining a clear skin is not as difficult and expensive as people make it to look and sound, there are some little tips to make your skin appear clear and beautiful in no time, first of all, if your skin is not clean it can never be clear, wash your face in the morning when you wake up, and again before bedtime, always use an antibacterial facial soap, there are many good products on the market these days, priced to suit any income, do not wash your face more than two times every day, over-cleansing can dry out your skin, which can cause your pores to produce more oil.

Use your fingertips or a washcloth, avoid scrubbing your skin as this also can cause your pores to over-produce oil. Always use an SPF facial moisturizer after you wash your face even if your skin is very oily, you should use a moisturizer as it helps achieve balance and even out skin tone, but make sure your moisturizer is oil-free, or non-comedogenic so it will not clog your pores and make sure any make-up you use is non-comedogenic. Also avoid getting hair products like hairspray or gel on your skin; try not to touch your skin with your hands during the day because oil and germs from your fingers can cause pimples.

And the final tip and most important tip for clear skin is - DO NOT squeeze pimples! Yes, it is tempting but squeezing a pimple will only make it get worse and take longer to clear and it bruises the skin, causes scarring, and can spread bacteria, causing more pimples. These simple, easy to follow tips will help you see clear, beautiful skin, sooner than you ever thought was possible. Daily use of sunscreen will help prevent irregular pigmentation from occurring; also tretinon-applied daily for many months will treat irregular pigmentation. To keep facial lines from setting in around your mouth, over-exaggerate smiling, and then gnash your teeth together. Repeat each motion 24 times.

To prevent a wrinkled neck, sweep your hands up under your chin and down again. Repeat 12 times. Rosewater can also be used as a home treatment, rosewater is filled with vitamin B, E, and k, and it is a good cleansing astringent as it wipes away gently the dirt and oil while nourishing the skin. You can also try moisturizing with natural emollient coconut oil, this exfoliates the outer layer of a dead skin while protecting it and moisturizing it and making it firmer, smoother and stronger, lastly a mixture of milk and honey, milk has lactic acid which is a natural exfoliant filled with vitamins and softener which helps in peeling the top layer of the skin while honey is a natural antibacterial and antiseptic agent that can help cleanse and shrink the pores while clearing it. Do not use moisturizers that contain mineral oils and other natural ingredients that have oil in it, as this will clog your pores the more so the general rule is to make sure the product is oil free for people with oily skin and vice versa for people with dry skin.

Acne skin

Acne is a skin condition that causes spots; most people affected by acne are aged between 12 and 25, however, men and women in their 30s and 40s can also suffer from acne, there are many treatments available to help deal with the condition. To maintain a clear acne skin, here are some tips to take note of: clean your skin gently - if you have acne, you should gently wash your face with a mild cleanser, once in the morning and once in the evening, as well as after heavy exercise, wash your face from under the jaw to the hairline and be sure to thoroughly rinse your skin, note that using strong soaps or rough scrub pads is not helpful and can actually make the problem worse, astringents are also not recommended unless the skin is very oily and then they should be used only on oily spots.

Avoid frequent handling of the skin - avoid rubbing and touching skin lesions, squeezing, pinching or picking blemishes can lead to the development of scars or dark blotches. Shave skin carefully - men who shave and who have acne should test both electric and safety razors to see which is more comfortable, when using a safety razor, make sure the blade is sharp and soften your beard thoroughly with soap and water before applying shaving cream, shave gently and only when necessary to reduce the risk of nicking blemishes. Avoid a sunburn or a suntan - many of the medicines used to cure a pimples can make you more prone to sunburn, a sunburn that reddens the skin or suntan that darkens the skin may make blemishes less visible and make the skin feel drier but these benefits are only temporary and there are known risks of excessive sun exposure, such as more rapid skin aging and a risk of developing skin cancer.

And lastly don't ever forget to choose your cosmetics carefully - while undergoing acne treatment you may need to change some of the cosmetics you use, all cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, moisturizers, and hair-care products should be oil free, choose products labeled non-comedogenic "meaning they do not promote the formation of closed pores", in some people, however, even these products may make acne worse. There are a vast variety of clear skin tips or ways to clear up acne, but not all are effective. Acne soaps and cleansers are the most important products but people ignore its importance. Although soaps and cleaners are common, they eliminate root causes of acne breakouts.

Smooth acne skin can be achieved when proper care is taken of the skin, for the face, a mild facial scrub helps keep skin soft and smooth; try Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub with moisture-rich soy and if your skin type is acne-prone, wash your face with a beta-hydroxy-acid cleanser that penetrates pores, removing dirt and oil like Biore Blemish Fighting Cleanser. When you follow all these steps including eating a healthy diet, you are well on your way to maintaining your acne skin and reducing blemishes.

Nehmen toxische Beauty - die Chemikalien in Ihrem Kosmetik eine Maut auf Ihre Gesundheit?

If you look at the ingredients of every skin-care product you currently own or almost all supposed "healthy" and expensive skin-care products sold in any store, you will find a combination of the following dangerous, chemical and synthetic ingredients. Please keep in mind that when you use ANYTHING on your skin or hair, ALL of the ingredients absorb into your body. Skin absorption is so potent that an increasing number of medicines are in patch form.

Your family's trusted soap, shampoo & toothpaste; the bubble bath and lotion your baby uses every day; your favourite face cream, lipstick, perfume and cleanser; and for the men -

your shaving cream, aftershave lotion, hair gel and even face scrub may all be cancer causing or carcinogenic.

Greater exposure from skin absorption

Your skin is the largest living organ of your body and many cancer-causing chemicals can be absorbed through it into the bloodstream. Research at the University of Pittsburgh shows that twice as much toxic chemicals can enter our body through the skin as through the intestine. Cosmetic and personal care products are most certainly absorbed through the skin.

Dr. Mercola says "putting chemicals on your skin is actually far worse than ingesting them, because when you eat something the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help break down and flush it out of your body. When you put these chemicals on your skin, however, it is absorbed straight into your blood stream without filtering of any kind".

The average woman absorbs over 5Lbs of ingredients from face and body-care products (excluding cosmetics) into her bloodstream over 60 years. Parabens have been shown to mimic oestrogen and may lead to an increased risk of developing cancer. British researchers have found traces of these chemicals in tissue taken from women with breast cancer. While there is no evidence that the parabens cause the cancers, tests suggest that chemicals do seep into the tissue after being applied to the skin.

According to a study quoted in The Safe Shopper's Bible, 13% of the cosmetic preservative, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) & 49% of the carcinogenic pesticide DDT (which is found in some cosmetics containing lanolin, is absorbed through the skin. Some chemicals like saccharin and fluoride in toothpaste can be ingested during use.

Applying creams and oils is NO DIFFERENT from eating them, because they enter the blood-stream regardless if they are ingested in the mouth or absorbed through the skin! If you want to experience how quickly your skin absorbs everything just rub garlic on the sole of your foot and wait 20 minutes to taste it in your mouth. So why don't you rub something good into your skin? There are hundreds of chemicals in skin and body care products, which are harmful. The 10 most common ones are listed below:

A list of the most common chemical ingredients found in beauty products

Parabens (Methyl-, Propyl-, Butyl-, Ethyl-): Some combination of these synthetic ingredients are in almost EVERY skin and hair product made today. Widely known to be highly toxic and cause allergic/skin reactions. Companies use this dangerous ingredient, because it is extremely cheap and extends the shelf life of the product by inhibiting microbial growth. It has shown to be teratogenic in mouse studies and may contain 1,4-dioxane, which is a carcinogen.

Propylene glycol (1,2-Propanediol): is used as avent, humectant and skin-conditioning agent found in most shampoos, conditioners and lotions. It is a petroleum

derivative, the major ingredient in industrial anti-freeze, brake & hydraulic fluids. A carcinogen, teratogen and suspected neuron-toxic hazard. Linked to skin irritation,

provokes acne, gastro-intestinal disturbances, nausea, headaches & vomiting. Over exposure can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

DMDM Hydrantoin A Petro-chemical used as an anti-freeze in cars.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): and the alcohol form of SLS. Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS). A detergent and emulsifier which strips the skin of its natural

oils, interfering with the skin's barrier function and making it easier for other chemicals to get through. Japanese studies have found SLS to be a mutagen. According to toxicologists,

any chemical capable of causing mutations (that is it can alter DNA) is likely to increase the risk of cancer. The real danger with this chemical is that it can react with other chemicals

used in cosmetics to form nitrates. Nitrates are known cancer-causing agents. According to experts, once nitrates have formed, they can enter the bloodstream in large numbers from

shampooing, and from using bubble bath, shower gels and facial cleansers. SLS & SLES are reportedly the only known cleansing agent to enter the blood system.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate is considered milder than Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate but contains 1,4 dioxane, a carcinogen. A foaming agent and one of the most commonly used chemicals

found in cosmetics. Also used in car washes, engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners and other products, which need foaming. It is absorbed by the skin and can cause damage

to skin, liver, brain, lung, heart and eyes. Can also damage the immune system and cause hair loss.

Health Hazards have been known about SLS & SLES for many years as stated in the journal of American College of Toxicology (1983), they include tissue damage that could result

in brain, liver, heart and lung damage in the long term, eye damage, degradation of the immune system, sever skin irritation, hair loss and eczema. When absorbed thru the skin

SLS maintains residual body levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain. Further reference see Dangerous Beauty Cosmetic & Personal care: Peter Dingi & Toni Brown 1999.

Fragrance: today's perfumes are not made from flowers but from chemicals, 95% of which are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum. Just one perfume can contain more than

500 chemicals and can cause dizziness, skin irritation and hyper-pigmentation. The words fragrance free aren't a safeguard either, as smell-masking chemicals may have been

added instead. Benzene, aldehyde, toluene, methylene chloride, limonene, benzyl acetate, aniline-D5, safrole, dimethyl sulfate all found by the US EPA, NTP & House of

Representatives Committee on Science & Technology to be carcinogenic. Butanol (group 1-, 2-, and Tert-), fragrances are highly neuron-toxic. Irritating to the eyes, nose

and throat. Can trigger an asthmatic reaction in previously healthy people.

Artificial Colours: Labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by colour numbers such as FDC Red 4, FDC Red 1, or Food Red 1. These are band in all foods as they are known causes of

urinary bladder polyps and wasting of the adrenal glands. But they can still be used in cosmetics! FD&C Blue No.1 is a known carcinogen. FD&C Yellow No.5 (CI 19140) & 6

(CI 15985) & D&C No.33 (CI 17200, impurities found in commercial batches of these colours have been shown to cause cancer not only when ingested, but also when applied to

the skin. Some artificial coal tar colours also contain heavy metal impurities, including arsenic and lead, which are carcinogenic.

Petrolatum: petroleum based chemicals exude synthetic estrogen which are called Xeno Estrogens. These bad estrogens are absorbed thru the skin and accumulate in our organs.

They also affect our respiratory system and can play havoc with the hormone balance. Petrochemicals are used in artificial colours, plastic, polyester, foam rubber, cosmetics,

perfumes, formaldehyde, toothpastes, mouthwashes, hair sprays, shampoos, lotions and preservatives (that go in cosmetics as well as food).

Triethanolamine (TEA)/Diethanolamine (DEA), Monoethanolamine (MEA): are the most commonly used chemicals in cosmetics. Used as a lathering agent and to adjust the pH in

cleansers, soaps, moisturising lotions and creams, shampoos and conditioners. Readily absorbed through the skin and accumulated in organs. One study found that the topical

application of DEA in rodents resulted in anemia, kidney degeneration, and nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord. (Melnick et al., 1994) Even more disturbing was that

several animals died before the study ended. High concentrations of DEA-based detergents are commonly used in a wide range of cosmetics and personal care products, including

shampoos, hair dyes & conditioners, lotions, creams and bubble baths. Lifelong use of these products clearly poses avoidable cancer risks to consumers, particularly babies

and young children. DEA related ingredients such as Stearamide DEA, Lauramide DEA, Cocamide DEA are widely used in a variety of cosmetic products. These ingredients function

as emulsifiers or foaming agents.

Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea: Used as a preservative, but a primary cause of contact dermatitis. You might see these toxic chemicals under the names

Germall II and Germall 115, which release formaldehyde at just over 10°.

Formaldehyde: A preservative used in many cosmetics especially nail hardeners and nail polish, which causes negative skin reactions. If it isn't listed as formaldehyde

then look for formaldehyde derived imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, 2-bromo-2-nitropane-1, 3-diol, DMDM hydantoin, and quarternium 15.

A carcinogen and irritant to the respiratory system and skin, causes dizziness, headaches, chest pain and weakens the immune system. The chemical name is Formalin (usually

the name used on nail polish labels in preference to formaldehyde. Used as a preservative in shampoos, baby washes, mascara, creams, bubble baths, anti-dandruff shampoos and

some deodorants.

Behentrimonium Chloride: Toxic ammonia compound. Ingestion can be fatal. Concentrations as low as 0.1% can be irritating to the eyes and cause necrosis (tissue death)

of mucus membranes.

Titanium, Zirconium, Benzalkonium, Bismuth, Antimony (*1), Barium (*2), Aluminum, Tin, Chromium, Benzene & PCBs: According to Dr. Hulda Reghi Clark, all of these

ingredients are extremely dangerous. *1 - Breast cancer cases show Titanium, Zirconium, Benzalkonium, Bismuth, Antimony, and Aluminum accumulation in the breast. *2 -Barium

is described in the Merck Index as a "caution". ALL water or acid soluble Barium is POISONOUS! 10ed. P.139, 1983. Aluminium, found in the majority of deodorants and

anti-perspirants. Results of WHO studies link regular use of aluminum based deodorants to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Mineral oil: This is a mixture of refined liquid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It coats the skin like plastic wrap, which interferes with the skin's natural immune

barrier and limits the skin's ability to breathe and release toxins. It also slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature ageing. Also known as

paraffin, paraffin oil, paraffinum liquidum. Found in baby lotions, face creams, eyeshadows, eye brow pencils, sorbolene products and hair products.

Saccharin: used as a flavouring agent-this is a synthetic compound derived from coal tar. It has been shown to cause bladder cancer in animal studies. Research has shown

that this chemical promotes the cancer-causing effects of other carcinogens.

Talc: Cosmetic talc is reportedly carcinogenic as it can be contaminated with asbestos fibres, which can be inhaled when applying makeup. (There is no safe level of

asbestos exposure). Clear evidence exists that inhaling talc and using it in the genital area causes ovarian cancer and urinary tract disorders as well as respiratory

distress in infants.

Coal tar: Often shows on labels as FD&C, or D&C colours, it is derived from petroleum and linked to asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness and lack of

concentration. Coal Tar contains petrochemicals such as benzene, xylene, toluene, and also heavy metal salts. Coal Tar is a known carcinogen increasing risks of skin lung,

scrotum and skin cancer. Often found in Lipsticks, eyeshadows, face creams and perfumes.

BNPD: also known as 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1, 3-diol or Bronopol, Onyxide 500. An anti-microbial agent that releases formaldehyde and nitrates. Probably carcinogenic

and mutagenic and can cause contact dermatitis. This chemical poses similar hazards for nitrosamine formation when combined with TEA or DEA, according to the SAFE Shopper's Bible.

"PEG": ingredients, "-eth" ingredients, "-oxynol-" ingredients, Polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, Polysorbate 60 & 80: According to the FDA

cosmetics containing detergents, foaming agents, emulsifiers and certain solvents with all these names may be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, which has been shown

to produce cancer of the liver and nasal tumors in animal tests, as well as systemic cancer in skin painting tests. According to the US Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA), 1,4-dioxane can be absorbed through the skin.

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA): one of the 10 most commonly used preservatives in cosmetics. Is listed as a carcinogen in U.S.A. and interferes with estrogen levels

(a xenoestrogen) by blocking the estrogen receptors. It is also absorbed through the skin and stored in the body.

Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): a preservative derived from Coal tar dye and petroleum. Banned in Sweden. Much more toxic than BHA. Is carcinogenic and teratogenic.

Can cause dermatitis or rashes, asthma attacks and breathing problems, fatigue, liver stress and much more. It is absorbed through the skin.

Fluoride: Sodium monofluorophosphate, sodium fluoride. an ingredient commonly found in toothpaste, it is a poison to humans when ingested over a long period, as it accumulates

in body tissues. "Fluoride a known carcinogen & teratogen, decreases fertility in women and is not approved by the FDA in the US. Fluoride has been removed from various animal

feeds because it was causing birth defects in the offspring. The growing scientific consensus is that fluoride provides no benefit to the teeth but does cause damage to the

bones and organs of the body." P. Dingle. Cosmetic & Personal Care, Dangerous Beauty. 1999. pp17.

Triclosan: Widely used in toothpaste and mouthwash-is linked to the increase in antibiotic-resistant 'superbugs'. Drinking mouthwash containing alcohol and fluoride is a major

source of poisoning among children.

Carageenan: is considered a possible human carcinogen by the WHO. Most toothpastes contain this chemical and it is better to err on the side of caution and avoid using it.

What you DO want in your beauty products......

Vitamin E: An antioxidant that helps the skin fight sun and pollution damage. May be labeled as d-alpha tocopherol (the natural form of vitamin E). A natural preservative.

Vitamin C: (ascorbic acid). A natural preservative and antioxidant that stimulates collagen and promotes elastin tissue growth.

Oatmeal: Soothes skin; relieves itching and inflammation.

Lecithin: An extract from soya beans (organic suppliers reject the GM variety) used to moisturize the skin; a natural humectant (attracts moisture to the skin).

Calendula: Assists skin regeneration and healing. Anti-inflammatory; eases skin irritations.

Chamomile: A calming, gentle herb that is good for healing sensitive skin.

Witch Hazel: A herb with good astringent and toning properties.

Cucumber: The extract has a cooling and softening effect on hard, roughened skin.

Ginseng: Skin rejuvenator.

Aloe Vera: A gentle healing and anti-inflammatory herb.

Rosehip: A natural emollient that restores the skin's acid balance.

Horsetail: This herb is used for acne and eczema. It is also a good hair strengthener.

Lavender: A good healing agent for psoriasis and eczema.

Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5): A natural emollient which keeps skin moist.

Peppermint: Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and good for regulating oily skin.

Lemongrass: Good for mild forms of acne and minor skin infections.

Vitamin A: Palmitate A natural preservative.

Xanthan Gum: A natural emulsifier.

Rosewater: A natural perfume.

Last words-It is best to be cautious!

The best way to ensure a product will do more good than harm is to know how to read the label. A good rule of thumb is to divide the ingredients into thirds: the top

third makes up 90-95% of the product, the middle about 5-8%, and the bottom about 1-3%. And know what the ingredients are. A great source is, The Chemical Maze by Bill Statham.

Epsom Salt For Healthy Living

Epsom salt is a chemical compound that has proven itself for having many uses. One such use that people have discovered for this salt is for promoting good health. Why has it come to be associated with healthy living? That is because it has magnesium, and magnesium is a very important element in making sure that our bodies are functioning as they should.

By what ways can we use this salt to help keep our bodies in tiptop shape? Here is a list of a few things we can do with Epsom salt for our health. As bath salts. It was first used as bath salts. A good soak in a tub filled with warm water and mixed with two cups is great for detoxifying the body and relieving stress.

Stress often reduces the level of magnesium in the body, and soaking in water mixed with Epsom salt restores the lost magnesium. It can also help in flushing out the toxins from the body and relieve muscle pain.

As a facial scrub. It can be an effective agent in cleaning and exfoliating the face. Exfoliating the face is necessary because it sloughs away the layers of dead skin cells from the face and allows newer, healthier cells to emerge. This is easy to do; all that needs to be done is to mix a pinch of Epsom salt with the facial scrub and massage it onto the face. Afterwards, rinse it off.

As a body scrub. Just like the skin on the face, the skin on the body also needs to be exfoliated. But other than that, massaging with it all over the body can also promote better blood circulation, soften the rough parts and help in making the skin tone look more even. Just rub this salt on your skin and rinse.

As a hair cleanser. The shampoo, conditioner and styling products that we use on our hair often leave remnants on each strand, leading to product buildup. When product buildup happens on the hair, it can be hard for the nutrients supposedly supplied by shampoo and conditioner to be absorbed by the hair.

As a constipation relief. Constipation is not just uncomfortable but painful. It is proven that drinking water mixed with a teaspoonful or two of Epsom salt can relieve a person of constipation.

These are just some of the uses Epsom salt has that can help promote bodily health. Having some this salt at home is always handy.

Natural skin and hair care

Why Natural?

What would you think if upon driving up to your neighborhood gas station you saw individuals running gasoline through their hair and buying miniature take home bottles to use for hand and foot moisturization? Imagine if upon visiting a chemical plant you witnessed the employees jump into a huge Jacuzzi whose froth and bubbles were generated by leftovers from whatever they had manufactured that day. Regardless of how much or how little you know about natural personal care products, you would probably be reluctant to believe the hype about such products regardless of how it was presented to you.

Unfortunately, many such ingredients are being sneaked into your shampoo, lipstick and lotion. To add insult to injury, these synthetic culprits are being marketed to you in bottles that say “all natural,” “botanical” and “organic.” Unless you take the time to read and research the ingredients contained in your personal care products, you may unwittingly be feeding the largest, permeable organ on your body minute but regular doses of carcinogenic and damaging meals.

Potentially harmful chemical agents that are frequently added to conventional cleansers and emulsions (e.g. lotions and creams) include; lauryl and laureth sulfates (surfactant and lathering agents that are drying to the skin and hair), and various parabens and PEG’s (preservatives which are petroleum derivatives and potential carcinogens). Glycerin, which is a beneficial by-product of the soap making process is often removed from bar soap, then sold separately for more profit, thus further enhancing the drying effects of the chemical agents in the soap. Conditioners are usually a chemical soup with a small percentage of nourishing ingredients whose effects are rendered useless by the damage done by the synthetics, and leave a residue that causes product build up, necessitating the switch to a different product every few months. The most effective healthy conditioning is offered by homemade hot oil and or pre-wash treatments that can be left in or shampooed out. One fragrance oil can contain as many as 200 individual synthetic components! Essential oils are the only ingredient suitable for scenting a product that is made to be used on human or animal skin. Safe preservatives are neem oil, and rosemary and grapeseed extracts.

The beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar industry in which the idea of using only pure and natural ingredients to nourish the hair and skin is slowly but surely gaining momentum. There are, however, many imposters and half-hearted attempts that are taking advantage of the all natural buzz. That is why the following information is designed to help those of you looking to make the transition navigate the waters regardless of what stage you are at in your quest for natural beauty.

Bar and liquid Soaps and Shampoos

Truly natural soap is made using fats and or oils, and a strong base such as sodium or potassium hydroxide. The end product is soap and water, with the lye being actually used up in the process. When this process happens at room temperature, the resulting product is called cold-process soap. Some natural soaps can also be made with heat. The natural glycerin is left in the soap, and many natural soapers add botanical clays, herbs and essential oils to further enhance the quality of the soap. This results in a superior bar of soap that is both cleansing and nourishing to the skin. Natural liquid soaps can be used interchangeably for both the skin and hair. We recommend liquid castile soap for both, and stick to brands that are free of preservatives and dyes. Some soapers do have special botanical blends that are especially good for the hair.

Conditioners and Hair Treatments

Most natural conditioners work best before you wash your hair. They can vary from a hot oil treatment of blended base and essential oils, a mixture of clay and powdered herbs to a fresh food mask that can include ingredients found in your refrigerator like yogurt, lemon, avocado and olive oil. The hair shaft and scalp are porous and if allowed to sit long enough, (heat opens the pores thus allowing the treatment to be absorbed faster), the nutritious elements of the treatment remain even after you shampoo. This way you gain all the advantages of the conditioning without worrying about product build up. Aloe Vera Gel is an excellent hair mouse/ gel, that works on everything from the straightest of hair to dreadlocks. It gives hold without leaving the hair hard, and can also give body, while enhancing both straight and curly styles. Be sure to use only the kind that you can drink, as this contains no oils and preservatives, (other than citric acid).

Toners, Exfoliators and Skin Treatments

Look for toners that are alcohol fee. Floral waters and hydrosols (by-products from the manufacture of essential oils) are the most gentle and nourishing for the skin. Witch hazel is great for oily skin, lavender for dry skin, rose for aging skin and chamomile for sensitive. Oil based sugar and salt scrubs are excellent Exfoliators and moisturizers for the body. Use apricot kernel meal and or fresh pureed papaya or pineapple to exfoliate the face (or masks that contain these enzymes as an alternative to alpha-hydroxy acids). There are numerous clays on the market that can be mixed to suit your skin type, or you can just buy pre-mixed clay facials. Clay is excellent for extracting toxins from the skin and cleansing the pores.

Body Moisturizers

Most lotions and creams are emulsions of water and oil components. Any emulsion requires a preservative to prevent or kill off the accumulation of potentially harmful bacteria at the interface of the oil and water molecule. A high quality natural emulsion will contain natural cold pressed and unrefined oils or butters, and the water component will also comprise of other nutritious ingredients such as aloe juice or gel, hydrosols, floral and herbal waters to name a few. It will also use only natural and safe preservatives e.g. grapeseed extract, therefore the shelf life of such a product may be 3 to 6 months. However the advantage of the product is its freshness, and the assurance that the production happens in small batches and your cream can be customized.

Ingredients should be easy to read and understand. Pay heed to scientific or botanical names following the common name for extracts and essential oils, so that you can recognize them easily in the future. The best time to apply a moisturizer is immediately after a warm bath or shower. At this point, the pores are still enlarged and the oils will be absorbed quicker by the skin. Another solution is to give your skin a hot oil treatment. Melt 2 tablespoons (3 or 4 if there is a little more of you to love or if you have a partner with whom to share this special treat) of your favorite unrefined butter(s) (shea, mango or cocoa) in a double boiler. Add 4-8 drops, depending on the strength desired, of essential oils if you wish. Do not overheat, as heat may destroy some of the benefits of the oils. Massage oils onto entire body. The oils absorb quickly, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple.

Perfumes

The ancient art and science of perfumery is experiencing a revival. After decades of using mass produced, overpriced, synthetic fragrances, many holistic consumers are returning to the idea of wearing natural personalized fragrances. Be sure that your perfume is scented only with essential oils or natural resins (e.g. Vanilla Oleoresin). Usually natural perfumes are available as spritzers, roll on’s, or wax cones, flooded with fragrance, that you rub onto the skin.

Make up

Natural makeup is now available that does not contain talc, dyes or chemicals. Minerals from the earth are used for color, while natural oils and botanicals are used for texture. The end product is flattering, and hypoallergenic.
